Path Traversal & Remote Code Execution in WSO2 API Suite (CVE-2026-5430)

What It Is — CVE‑2026‑5430 is a path‑traversal flaw discovered in WSO2 API Control Plane, API Manager, Traffic Manager and Universal Gateway. The defect lets an unauthenticated attacker craft a request that traverses the filesystem, upload arbitrary files and ultimately achieve remote code execution on the host.

Exploitability — No public exploit has been observed, but the vulnerability is rated high (CVSS ≈ 9.0) and a proof‑of‑concept exists. Attackers can weaponize the flaw quickly once a vulnerable instance is reachable.

Affected Products — WSO2 API Control Plane, WSO2 API Manager, WSO2 Traffic Manager, WSO2 Universal Gateway (all supported versions prior to the vendor’s patch).

Why It Matters for Trust & Control Assurance

  • Tests the vulnerability‑management control objective: continuous discovery, risk‑based prioritization, and timely remediation of software flaws.
  • Demonstrates the need for continuous monitoring of third‑party components to provide defensible evidence that patches are applied promptly.
  • A successful exploit would break the audit trail for change‑control and could invalidate compliance attestations across frameworks (e.g., NIST CSF, ISO 27001).

Recommended Actions

  • Inventory every WSO2 instance across your environment.
  • Apply the vendor‑released patches or mitigations immediately.
  • Update your vulnerability‑management tooling to flag CVE‑2026‑5430 and capture remediation evidence.
  • Document the remediation steps and retain logs for audit readiness.
