Critical Directory Traversal in InduSoft Web Studio (CVE‑2014‑0780) Exposes Administrative Credentials

What It Is

InduSoft Web Studio’s NTWebServer component contains a directory‑traversal flaw that lets a remote attacker request files outside the web root. By retrieving “*.APP” configuration files, an adversary can read stored administrative passwords and subsequently execute code with the privileges of the Web Studio service.

Exploitability

The vulnerability is rated High (CVSS ≥ 7.5). Public proof‑of‑concept code and detailed exploit steps have been published since the original disclosure in 2014. No recent active‑exploitation campaigns have been confirmed, but any unpatched deployment remains at risk.

Affected Products

  • Vendor: InduSoft (now part of AVEVA)
  • Product: InduSoft Web Studio – NTWebServer module (all versions prior to the vendor‑released patch)

Why It Matters for Compliance & Audit Readiness

  • Access‑Control Assurance: Exposure of administrative credentials directly undermines privileged‑access controls required by frameworks such as NIST 800‑53 AC‑2 and ISO 27001 A.9.2.
  • Continuous Control Monitoring: Detecting anomalous file‑read requests to “*.APP” files provides measurable evidence of control effectiveness and supports a defensible audit trail.
  • Vendor‑Management Controls: The issue highlights the need for a documented patch‑management process and regular verification of third‑party component versions, a key control in SOC 2 CC6.1 and PCI DSS 6.2.

Recommended Actions

  • Patch/Upgrade: Apply the vendor‑released fix or upgrade to the latest InduSoft Web Studio release.
  • Inventory & Verification: Confirm that no legacy NTWebServer instances remain in production; document version status as evidence of due diligence.
  • Network Segmentation & Access Controls: Restrict HTTP access to NTWebServer to trusted management subnets; enforce least‑privilege service accounts.
  • Log Monitoring: Enable and review server logs for unexpected “../” path requests or access to *.APP files; retain logs for the audit period.
  • Credential Rotation: Immediately rotate any administrative passwords that may have been stored in APP files, and store new credentials in a vault with audit logging.
